    Dear Sir or Madam

CHARACTER REFERENCE IN RESPECT OF MR. NEAL WOOD.

I have known Neal for almost six years having been a student of his during that time. As his oldest student by far I have been very impressed with his commitment to my development as a drummer. Each student benefits from Neal's enthusiasm, knowledge and personal approach to his or her needs.

I have experienced Neal's tuition style in both group and one-to-one situations and I have been aware of his positive perspective at all times. There is never the hint of criticism; I feel he gets the best out of his students and rightly earns their respect.

I believe Neal to be a man of integrity with a strong moral code and appreciation of family values. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I trust that the information provided will be of assistance and will be happy to provide further information, if required.

    To whom it may concern;

    Reference Mr Neal Wood,

We would like to confirm that we have known Mr Wood for eight years, initially as our son Alex's drum teacher and then as a family friend.

We initially contacted Mr Wood to ask if he would teach Alex to play the drums, after he was recommended to us by staff in Dennis Todd’s music shop in Bedlington. As he would be coming into our home and would be left alone with Alex, it was important to us that he was always professional and trustworthy. From our first contact to date, we have always found him to possess these qualities.

Mr Wood was very focussed on teaching our son to the best of his ability; he was always punctual and reliable, lessons were well planned, he was well respected locally as a drummer, had lots of musical contacts and he helped Alex advance quickly to a very high standard of drumming. He taught male and female pupils, from beginners to very skilled musicians and could tailor the lessons accordingly. Alex was very fond of Mr Wood and looked forward to his lessons.

Alex’s drumming was of such a good standard that he gained entry into Drum Tech in London and lecturers there were very impressed with the standard he had been taught to by Mr Wood, especially his sight reading of music, which is a skill that not all drum teachers offer, but one that is essential for progression to skilled drumming.

We hold Mr Wood in the highest esteem and acknowledge that Alex’s success was largely due to Mr Wood's teaching. We would have no hesitation in recommending him for a teaching position and are sure that he would be a great asset to any school's music department.

If you require any further information, please contact us.

    Yours faithfully,

    Brian and Angela Thompson

    Character Reference - Neal Wood

I first met Neal Wood in 2006, when I started taking drum lessons from him in Morpeth, Northumberland. He continued to teach me until August 2011 when I left home, and we have stayed in regular contact from then on.

From my first lesson I was struck by Neal's dedication to getting the most out of his students, his extensive knowledge of drumming and his professionalism. I was always made to feel comfortable in lessons without losing focus, and we would often have lengthy conversations about music and what I aimed to get out of the lessons. I feel Neal always found the balance between teaching what I was most keen to learn continued to be a significant part of my life for the last year, and I am sure this will continue in future. This is largely due to the quality of teaching We had in Morpeth.

Recently I have assisted Neal at his private drum school “Cool as Funk” on a voluntary basis, and I can affirm that his students are highly complementary of his work. It is also clear to me from this experience that Neal is willing and capable of teaching all ages, from keen young beginners to the elderly. He treats his students with respect, dignity and all the patience that a good teacher should.

So in summary, I strongly believe Neal is an honest, skilled individual and someone who keeps his word. I wish him all the best in the future.

    Cool as Funk Drum School

I have known Neal for about three years after starting drum lessons with him in 2009. Neal is extremely knowledgeable about all forms drumming and drummers and he delivers lessons with enthusiasm and patience.

Neal teaches a number of different styles of drumming including rock and funk and writes his own music. He teaches a number of pupils both individually and in groups and creates a great atmosphere of learning across the whole group.

in addition to attending individual lessons I also attend Neal's ‘Drum Circle’, a bi-weekly group session for a mixed group playing and learning Djembe.

Neal has created a unique school of drumming that combines individual lessons on an electronic kit with a studio where pupils can play along with Neal using the two acoustic kits available. Neal’s studio combines acoustic kit with traditional instruments such as Djembe, Bongo and Glockenspiel. He works well in the studio with a mixed age group providing drum lessons, Djembe and also arranging various shows that allow his students to both practice and perform in public. He also provides ‘sticking’ sessions for the group to practice basic drumming techniques making good use of a metronome to encourage both speed and timing.

He is totally dedicated to providing top class drum lessons for his pupils and is always looking for new ways to improve the lessons and the studio environment. I thoroughly enjoy having lessons with Neal, he provides a great atmosphere in which to work and learn, everyone is encouraged to learn at a pace that suits them but the group sessions also provide an opportunity to meet and mix with the other students providing an excellent opportunity to learn from each other in a mixed ability session.

Neal is open and honest, provides positive feedback during lessons and actively encourages his students to try out different styles of drumming using both his own music and play along tracks. I find Neal to be a very good teacher, he gets on well with students of all ages and provides a fantastic atmosphere in the group sessions.

I would be pleased to recommend Neal for any position and provide a formal reference if required.
